Luang Prabang
A visit to Luang Prabang in many ways is to journey back to the old
Orient. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this former royal capital of
Laos has preserved much of its tranquil, French colonial past. Populated
by diverse ethnic groups, local tribespeople are a common site in
the bustling markets and on the lightly traveled lanes that have changed
little over the decades.
The city is surrounded by forested mountains and rests on the north
bank of the mighty Mekong River. Although it is Laos' second biggest
city, after the capital Vientiane, the town still has yet to feel
the strong encroachments of modernity. Its combination of indigenous
culture and French colonial heritage continues to draw fascinated
visitors, charmed by the East/West fusions of cuisine, architecture,
and lifestyle.
The city's colonial history can be explored at the Royal Palace Museum.
Overlooking the Mekong, this former residence of King Sisavong Vang
contains a 38 cm solid gold Buddha image from the 1st century, carved
elephant tusks, and many other Laotian treasures. An extraordinary
tree of life mosaic can be found at Wat Xieng Thong, the city's finest
temple. While hundreds of Buddha statues stand waiting to be discovered
in the Pak Ou Caves, a 25 km boat ride from the town center.
Krabi
The verdant beauty of Krabi island is matchless. Surrounded by dozens
of pristine, untouched, islands, this destination is a paradise for
devotees of snorkeling, diving, sailing, and other island hopping
adventures.
About 90 minutes by air from Bangkok, and easily accessible from Phuket,
Krabi is a virtual treasure trove of natural splendors. From the famous
limestone karsts and cliffs to rainforest trails and the emerald waters
of the Andaman Sea, the island never fails to excite the senses of
visitors.
Krabi's main beach Ao Nang is a lively place, but less boisterous
than the city beaches of Pattaya and Phuket. Local residents prefer
the nearby Noppara Thara Beach. While those seeking a bit more solitude
and romance, often explore the white sands of Tubkaak and Klong Muang.
For boating enthusiasts, the waters around scenic Koh Hong island
and Phang Nga Bay deliver unforgettable experiences, and are often
visited by those staying on the neighboring islands Koh Phi Phi and
Koh Lanta.
